About Artist
Silent Fox is a multidisciplinary artist, graphic designer, and muralist based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Grounded in drawing and painting, they create colorful figurative works that re-envision childhood narratives. Fox uses art as a form of alchemy, turning thoughts, wonder, and imagination into physical works of art. Their artistic philosophy, reflected in their chosen name Silent, emphasizes the power of quiet reflection and meaningful exploration in their creative process. They have participated in residencies at Proof Public, Highpoint Center for Printmaking, Mango Days, and Grand Marais Art Colony. Fox has exhibited their work in the Twin Cities, including a solo exhibition at Public Functionary, and group exhibitions at Augsburg University, Vine Arts, Creative Gallery, and The Show Gallery-Lowertown. Fox has curated exhibitions in collaboration with the University of Minnesota and the Hennepin Theatre. From 2020 to 2025, Fox has collaborated with local artists to work on multiple murals in Minneapolis under Creatives after Curfew Collective. The collective was community-driven as the artist created public art in solidarity with the uprising, pushing back against police violence and supporting community healing.
Artist Statement
Silent Fox is a Minneapolis-based multidisciplinary artist whose bold worlds blend the comfort of childhood imagination with the weight of adult social realities. Their vivid, stylized characters play out emotional narratives that explore human experiences, aspirations, and history, inviting viewers to move beyond playfulness into empathy, reflection, and the collective reimagining of a more caring space.
Similar to having imaginary friends early in life, Fox’s figures function as companions that roam alone or join with either a human or a human persona as they navigate an unknown world. Works begin on a blank surface such as canvas, paper, mirror, or resin, and digitally with an iPad, camera, or computer. Fox constructs imagined universes with materials such as acrylic paint, colored pencil, alcohol markers, and digital illustration. With each body of work, Fox starts with a series of sketches based on their recurring characters, imagination, and found images. After completing a series of sketches, Fox then takes the sketches to help develop a consistent theme that guides what research is needed to build the world the art is meant to bring viewers into.
Fox’s artistic vision connects to the storytelling of Hayao Miyazaki, the bold energy of Cai Guo-Qiang, and the vibrant, contemporary figurative styles of Hebru Brantley and Kayla Mahaffey. In addition, Fox finds inspiration from American cartoons and Japanese anime from a wide range of sources beginning with late 1900s Nintendo games, Studio Ghibli films, and Cartoon Network animations. Their art appears to be playful on the surface, but it carries deeper reflections on complex social realities. In past works, Fox referenced James Baldwin, Brené Brown, Frank B. Wilderson III, and Alan Watts to create space to discuss generational trauma, mental health, and the black experience. They hope to invite the viewer to go beyond the surface. Each character in Fox’s images is a guide that brings momentarily lonely souls together. Cartoon characters have a timeless appeal that transcends generations because they provide care and familiarity, echoing the comfort they hold on to from childhood. Fox creates art that offers empathy while addressing challenging experiences they have witnessed or lived through. Fox’s goal is to reimagine the world by building visual spaces where caring for humanity is within reach. Using art as a form of alchemy, Fox’s hope is to bring abstract thoughts and imagination into physical form. Their body of work reflects transformation from the individual processing society's challenges alone to ideas of collective dialogue and envisioning a new world.
