Artist Statement
Silent Fox is a Minneapolis-based multidisciplinary artist whose bold, cartoon-influenced worlds blend the comfort of childhood imagination with the weight of adult social realities. Using vivid color, stylized figures, and companion-like characters inspired by cartoons, anime, and pop culture, Fox creates emotional narratives that explore human experiences, one’s aspirations, and history through storytelling; inviting viewers to move beyond playfulness into empathy, reflection, and the collective reimagining of a more caring world.
Images of different human personas enduring what they perceive to be a human experience. Similar to having imaginary friends early in life, Fox creates companions that roam alone or move with a human persona as they navigate an unknown world. Fox creates an experience guiding viewers through with the use of bold colors and stylized figures. Works began on a blank surface using physical mediums (such as, such as canvas, paper, mirror, and resin ) and digital tools ( such as an iPad, camera, and computer). Through the use of technology, Fox finds inspiration from American cartoons and Japanese anime. In their artwork, viewers can find visual inspiration beginning in the late 1900s with material such as Nintendo games, Studio Ghibli films, and Cartoon Network animated shows. Fox constructs imagined universes through diverse artistic forms. These forms include acrylic paint, color pencil, alcohol markers, and digital illustration. Their art uses figurative narrative and visual storytelling to imagine utopic worlds created from their imaginative reality. Every artwork begins with a sketch and a loose idea, evolving through research and reflection. Research is the textual language informed by read text, spoken conversations, listened audio, and analyzed video. Lost in reflection, Fox begins to dissect what needs to be vs what they hope to be. Which helps guide the native of each body of work. In the past, Fox has researched topics around generational trauma, mental health, and black history.
Influenced by a cartoon aesthetic and pop culture references, their art appears playful on the surface but carries deeper reflections on complex social realities. Their hope is to extend an invitation to go beyond the surface. Each character is created as a guide or companion with the purpose of bringing momentarily lonely souls together. Cartoon characters are critical to their work and audience, as they have a timeless appeal that transcends generations. They use cartoon characters to provide care and familiarity, echoing the comfort they hold on to from childhood are hallmarks of Silent Fox’s work. Fox creates art that offers empathy while addressing challenging topics through witnessed and lived experiences.. Fox’s goal is to reimagine the world by building spaces where caring for humanity is within reach.
Inspirations include Cai Guo-Qiang, Hayao Miyazaki, Hebru Brantley, and Kayla Mahaffey. Using art as a form of alchemy, Fox’s hope is to bring abstract thoughts and imagination into physical form. Their body of work is a transformation from an individual processing society's challenges to people coming together through conversations, envisioning a new world and creating shared experiences.
